Musician, Singer/Songwriter, Yoga Teacher & Retreat Facilitator
Jaya Lakshmi began leading kirtan and writing devotional songs on the guitar, harmonium and piano in the early 1990′s shortly after receiving harinam initiation from Srila Govinda Maharaj, a spiritual teacher of bhakti (devotion) from West Bengal, India.
As a singer/songwriter she is known for her authentic and deep devotional spirit as well as playing an important part in establishing kirtan and mantra music in the west.
From a young age Jaya Lakshmi was drawn to sacred music and stories and she has brought this love to life in her concert performances. Her angelic voice and loving presence opens the heart in a way that brings the listener into a state of harmony and bliss.
From 1997 to 2004 she rocked the role of lead singer/songwriter in the groundbreaking tribal-trance band Lost at Last (West Coast USA) which produced 3 albums.
During the years 2003-2009, greatly inspired to record her kirtan and mantra music, she released 4 solo chant albums on Sequoia Records.
To continue the legacy of Lost at Last she learned how to produce her own electronica music and in 2010 coined the word "Kirtronica" - kirtan and mantra sung live over EDM (electronic dance music).
From 2011 to 2020 she created 11 more mantra/spiritual song albums, including 2 solo and 9 in collaboration with Ananda Das which were released on Sounds True, Spirit Voyage and independently.
Jaya Lakshmi tours regularly in the USA (mostly western region) and internationally and has a global following. She continues to explore her unique expression as a singer, songwriter, musician and composer with her ongoing recordings and performances.
A dedicated yogi, she has regularly practiced hatha-based yoga since 1996, including Ashtanga and Anusara, and Kundalini Yoga since 2010. She is certified in Sattva Yoga (Rishikesh, India 2020).
In May of 2021 she established her annual Goddess Mantras Vocal Empowerment and Yoga Retreat for Women with the aim to help women integrate Goddess teachings of the Vedas into their practice and lifestyle.
She also holds (co-ed) Empower Your Voice through Mantra and Yoga retreats in Hawaii, Sedona, Oregon, and other destination spots.
A Life of Music
Jaya Lakshmi's music creates an opening for light transmission and healing to occur. Connected to an ancient lineage of bhakti, she reminds us of the nectarian sweetness of our true devotional nature and the bliss of surrendering to the Divine. Her songs summon courage and faith and reveal the alchemy of personal transformation. She invites us to celebrate our ability to turn pain to peace, fear to love, and darkness to light by fully facing and embracing what we resist. From this place we shift our perspective by the power of our will and open to divine grace.
“Through singing and mantra we learn how to open ourselves in a gentle way and accept the beauty and perfection of what is, increasing our capacity for unconditional joy and contentment in life.” - Jaya Lakshmi
